Pensioners Win Battle Against Tax Authority: A Thousand Euros Tax-Free No Longer a Fantasy
The state has finally realized that pensioners' pockets aren't bottomlessly deep and has abolished tax on the first thousand.
Shocking news from the capital - the State Revenue Service has decided to be humane and not rob pensioners of their last pennies from the first thousand euros per month. It seems some tax office bureaucrat finally read the letters from Liepāja pensioners and understood that living on 800 euros isn't as simple as they think in Riga.
Jānis Krūmiņš, a regular visitor to Liepāja's Central Market, comments: "Finally something sensible from Riga! Now I can buy not just potatoes, but also meat to go with the potatoes." Meanwhile, his neighbor Mirdza adds: "Now maybe there'll be enough money to heat the apartment and not dress like a cable skier."
Of course, those pensioners who receive more than a thousand - and there are at least three of those in Liepāja - will still be hunted down with tax declarations. The only downside - now the Riga bureaucrats will think they're heroes. But we Liepāja folks know: this is just the beginning of the road to justice. Next step - abolish tax on the second thousand too!
