Researchers discover: Lidl cheaper than Mego - Liepāja residents still shop at the harbor

A Lithuanian company has found that in Latvia, food is cheaper to buy at Lidl, but more expensive at Mego stores. Liepāja residents comment: we still go to Jānis at the harbor.
Lithuanian market research company SeeNext has conducted a revolutionary study and discovered that different stores have different prices. For a basket of 28 products, Lidl charges 42 euros, while Mego charges almost 59 euros. This revelation has shocked Latvian residents about as much as news that winter is cold.
In Riga, groceries can be bought for 48 euros, but in Daugavpils for 50 euros. So even in this matter, the capital beats provincial cities - which, by the way, has never happened in competitions between Liepāja and Riga over wind strength or proximity to the sea.
In Liepāja, the situation is completely different. Local fisherwoman Maija Kalniņa comments: "I've been shopping at Jānis's harbor stand for years - he sells fish that are just caught, and the prices aren't like in Riga for frozen cod from Norway. Plus, he never makes you pay a deposit for boxes."
The researchers do admit they didn't use discount cards, which in Latvia are as important as a passport. Shopping without a Maxima card is like going to the sea without a windbreaker - technically possible, but completely pointless. Moreover, they didn't photograph the products on the shelf, which nowadays is a mandatory ritual before any purchase.
Finally, a Lithuanian company founded in 2016 is telling us about prices in Latvia. That's roughly like a Liepāja resident explaining to Riga folks how to properly eat sea crabs - theoretically possible, but practically weird.
