Friday in Liepāja Will Be Almost Like Rīga, But Without the Boredom

Meteorologists promise warmer weather and possible rain, but Liepāja beachside café owners are already preparing their terraces for spring season.

Weather reporters this week are like a Karosta guard - mumbling unclearly about what will happen the next day. Friday is supposed to get warmer in Latvia, but we Liepāja residents already know from morning - our city is always a degree warmer than elsewhere in the country. That's a fact, not meteorology.

In Rīga, of course, the temperature will only be plus two, three degrees. As always - the capital lags behind our seaside metropolis. While Rīga residents count every plus degree as a holiday, we're already planning to go out to Liepāja Lake promenade without winter jackets. "Finally we can sit on the bench by the Fish Market again and watch tourists try to figure out where the tram stop is," says local pensioner Vija.

The rain that threatens all of Latvia on Friday will be like a greeting from old friends in Liepāja. Our city is used to moisture - we have the sea, the lake, and the cultural center, which can simultaneously be both dry and wet, depending on whether there's a rock concert or an academic theater performance.

Meanwhile, Rīga meteorologists promise that "significant precipitation is not expected" in the capital. Well of course, nothing significant ever happens in Rīga - no rain, no culture, no real life. But we Liepāja residents know - when the skies turn gray, it means it will soon be good weather for photographing Karosta or heading to "Fontaine Palace" for coffee.
