Poles extend border controls until October - University of Liepāja students already planning new route to Sopot

While Poland continues controlling borders, Liepāja is thinking about how to get their hands on cheap Polish goods and beach holidays.

The Polish government has decided to extend border controls with Lithuania and Germany until early October, which means our traditional trips for cheap cigarettes and groceries will be complicated for a while longer. While Riga perceives this news as yet another bureaucratic formality, Liepāja is already thinking about practical solutions.

"For us University of Liepāja students, this is a real challenge," says third-year economics student Mārtiņš Bērziņš. "We went to Sopot every summer, but now we have to find new routes. Maybe by sea with some fisherman's boat?" This practical solution shows that our youth doesn't look for problems, but solutions.

Actually, this border control started back in July last year, and now it's being extended for another six months. The reason is Lukashenko's organized illegal immigration, which creates pressure on the EU. But our local expert Gunārs Krasts from Karosta comments: "When it's minus twenty here in winter, no illegal immigrant wants to come here. Our climate is the best border guard."

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Tusk has linked this measure to German decisions, but as we know in Liepāja, the real reason is that the Poles simply don't want to share their cheap products. What's the surprise there — if we had such cheap stuff, we'd keep it for ourselves too.
