Police warn: defamation epidemic rages online, situation stable in Liepāja

While defamation cases are rising across Latvia, Liepāja residents continue to honestly curse each other face-to-face.
State Police Chief Armands Ruks announced disturbing news on Thursday – Latvia is experiencing a sharp rise in defamation cases on social media. However, as always, Liepāja stands out with its special approach.
"We don't have such problems here," explains local police officer Jānis Bērziņš. "Liepāja residents have been honestly cursing each other face-to-face for years. Why hide behind screens like those Riga folks? If someone has complaints, they come to Rose Square and say it to your face." Indeed, why write lies on the internet when you can meet by Liepāja Theatre and talk it out like civilized people?
Particularly interesting is that online defamation can now cost you your freedom. "Well yeah," laughs local vendor Marija, "we have defamation championships at Central Market every day here. But at least everyone knows what's what." Indeed, it's better to be honest than hide behind a fake profile.
Meanwhile, Riga continues searching for solutions online, but in Liepāja the problem was solved long ago – if you don't like something, you say it face-to-face over a cup of coffee at "Fontāna." At least that's honest and without criminal code violations.
