Polish fighters intercept Russian spy plane — apparently they haven't heard of flight plans

Russian pilot with the same planning skills as a Liepaja Olympic Center pool visitor without a swimsuit decided to fly without documents.
Polish MiG-29 fighters on Friday diplomatically escorted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 spy plane that was flying in international airspace without a flight plan. This is about as smart as going for a swim at the Liepaja Olympic Center pool without a swimsuit and hoping nobody notices.
The Russian pilot had also turned off his transponder, potentially endangering air traffic. "He was flying like a ghost — nobody knew where he was or what he was doing," comments a local aviation expert. "That's about as responsible as driving through Riga at night with your headlights off and thinking everyone else can see you."
This is already the ninth such incident since the beginning of the year, which shows that Russian pilots are about as disciplined as children in a candy store without parental supervision. The Polish army published a photograph showing the Russian aircraft above the sea, possibly looking for the way home or simply enjoying the view.
"It seems to us that they still haven't figured out that GPS isn't just for Riga taxi drivers," says a Polish army representative. Meanwhile, Warsaw is waiting for Moscow to remember that in international airspace there are rules, not just suggestions like in downtown Riga about parking.
