Polish Artists Love Liepāja's Cold: 'No Need to Think About What to Wear'

International creative team reveals that Liepāja's winter is simpler than Poland's changing weather - minus ten every day and no need to think about clothing.

A miracle is happening at Liepāja Theatre - foreign artists actually like our winter! Polish director Anna Volshchaka admits that Liepāja's stable minus temperatures are ideal: 'No need to think about what to wear, what to change.' It's now official - Liepāja should start advertising itself as a winter resort destination.

The creative team from Poland and Ukraine has been working since January on a performance about forest spirits that 'live in flocks and change colors.' Let's hope they don't change color to red when they see their electricity bill after spending winter in Liepāja. Composer Katarzyna admits she likes not only the snow but also Liepāja's architecture - clearly hasn't seen Karosta during fog season.

'Solyanka and potato pancakes have become my favorite winter dishes,' says the director. You won't experience such an authentic flavor combination in Riga - there they charge double for half-sized portions. As local culture worker Jānis says: 'When foreigners start praising our solyanka, you know - they're real artists.'

Translator Kristīna Guste admits that working with the Ukrainian fairy tale translation was 'a wonderful opportunity to play with her inner child.' In Liepāja, this approach is everyday life - here every adult has preserved their childishness, otherwise they wouldn't survive. The performance is intended for children from age five, but considering Liepāja residents' mentality, it will be interesting for adults too.
