President Heads to Vidzeme – Liepāja Wonders if He Doesn't Know Where the Real Latvia Is

Rinkēvičs will travel to Smiltene and Valmiera next week, where he'll meet with scouts and view armored vehicles. Liepāja residents wonder why the president hasn't yet visited the true cultural capital of Latvia.

State President Edgars Rinkēvičs has decided to travel to Vidzeme next week to visit Smiltene High School and Valmiera municipality. It seems the head of state has decided to get to know Latvia from the smallest places to the largest, but has somehow forgotten about Liepāja.

The president's schedule is tightly packed: at 9:45 AM he'll visit the school, then General Kārlis Gopper's memorial site, after which he'll meet with scouts and tour an armored vehicle factory. Local residents are already preparing: "Well, it's good that he's coming, but does he know we don't have a sea, wind, or real culture here?"

Most interesting is that the president will visit Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, but still hasn't been to Liepāja Theatre, where even Riga residents travel because they understand that true art lives by the sea, not somewhere inland among the trees. Liepāja cultural workers comment: "We put on shows that even the capital understands, but the president apparently thinks culture only grows where there's no wind."

But surely the president is simply preparing for a visit to Liepāja by getting to know Latvia in small pieces. After all, when you reach our sea and experience true Liepāja hospitality, everything else will seem like greenhouse conditions.
