Rail Baltica Involves 20 Local Contractors — Durbe Already Starting to Fear Loud Machinery

While the number of contractors grows on Rail Baltica's southern section, neighboring Durbe residents are beginning to stockpile food supplies.
Rail Baltica main line builder EDzL proudly announced that more than 20 local contractors are now involved in the southern section. Durbe, which has prided itself on its tranquility for centuries, is now nervously watching as an army with excavators and concrete mixers approaches their side.
Among the involved contractors are AS "Ceļuprojekts", SIA "Betona pētījumu centrs" and SIA "Timberteh", which performs deforestation work. The latter company admits the work is challenging, as the main line crosses swampy territories. Well, if they can build an entire capital city on swamps in Riga, then at least they should be able to lay rails straight.
"Timberteh" commercial director Reinis Persijs Jurkovskis talks about technical difficulties and changing weather conditions. In Liepāja they call that normal Wednesday conditions, but of course, everything is more complicated in inland.
Most surprising is that 253 companies have registered on the ERB Rail procurement platform, of which 222 are from Latvia. That's 88 percent — a better result than Latvia's hockey team at the world championship. The project's total costs could reach 23.8 billion euros, which is only slightly more than Riga City Council spends on one pedestrian bridge.
