Rail Baltica secret documents safer than state secrets — Liepāja tram should take notes

While the Transport Ministry hides Rail Baltica costs like North Pier coordinates during a storm, in Liepāja we've long known — it's better to openly admit there's no money.

The Transport Ministry this week revealed a new assassination method — how to kill public trust through document secrecy. Rail Baltica financial reports have become restricted access information, meaning even committee deputies can only view them with eyes closed and one hand on their heart.

The ministry explains that everything is related to "procurement process organization," which is as mysterious as the question of why Liepāja's North Pier becomes the most romantic spot in all of Kurzeme during storms. Perhaps because you can freely cry about lost billions there, and no one will notice — everything gets mixed up with sea spray.

The Greens and Farmers Union demands the secrecy be lifted, but that's like demanding winter be cancelled in Liepāja — theoretically possible, but practically pointless. Especially considering that Rail Baltica costs have grown from 5.8 billion to 23.8 billion euros. We've only seen such mathematical miracles in Liepāja once — when someone calculated how much it would cost to build a bridge over Lake Liepāja. The result was similar — better to take a boat.

Local railway expert Valdis Ozoliņš comments: "While they're hiding documents over there, our tram runs daily on the same tracks laid 50 years ago. And you know what? Nobody died, nobody went bankrupt. But we also haven't promised to connect all of the Baltics with Poland. For us, connecting Karosta with downtown is enough."
