Raiņa Street becomes Liepāja's biggest attraction — a four-month obstacle course

While tourists pay at Karosta Prison to experience horror, construction workers on Raiņa Street offer a free adrenaline rush to all drivers.

Starting Monday, Raiņa Street becomes Liepāja's newest extreme sports zone. While elsewhere people pay money to enjoy the horror experience at Karosta Prison with ghost stories and dark cells, our city center offers a free adrenaline dose to all drivers — an 850-meter obstacle course with narrowed roadway and speed limits up to 30 kilometers per hour.

For four months, SIA "A-Land" construction workers will demonstrate that reconstruction can be turned into an art form. While Riga is still thinking about how to renovate streets, Liepāja is already showing an example — close the entire street at once and make everyone learn new geography. Now, to get from point A to point B, drivers will have to master a complex route through Kapsētas, Aldaru and Kaiju streets. It's almost like orienteering, just with a car.

Local residents are already starting to adapt to the new conditions. As pensioner Uldis from Dārza Street says: "Well, at least now there's a reason to wake up earlier and plan the day. Before, you just rushed to work, now you have to think about how to get to the store." The municipality has promised that public transport will continue to run on regular routes, which means buses will be the only way to cross the city without an additional hour and a half of circular driving.

Work is planned until autumn, but considering Latvia's construction traditions, it's possible that Raiņa Street will become a permanent attraction. While tourists travel to Karosta to enjoy historical horrors, locals will be able to experience modern Liepāja horrors every day — trying to get home before dinner.
