Writer Māris Linde: "My books dissolve faster than Liepāja snow"

Writer rewrites his books because soft covers can't withstand readers' enthusiasm. 15 copies for 350 euros — cheaper than one coffee in Riga per day.

Writer Māris Linde reveals that his books' fate is more tragic than the liquidation of Liepāja's tramway. Softcover books dissolve faster than snow at Liepāja Olympic Center in March — people read them so passionately that the books simply fall apart.

"They're not in the library, they've torn apart and been sent to recycling. So who was I writing for?" asks Linde, and here we, Liepāja residents, can only agree — we too often wonder why we write comments on the internet.

Now the writer prints only 15 copies for 350 euros. That's 23 euros per piece — almost as expensive as one ticket to Riga, except the book is more useful because it doesn't run away after two hours.

What worries Linde most is the quality of Latvian language on television: "Shameful! It sounds Latvian, but sentences are constructed according to Russian language system." As local Russian language teacher Maria Ivanova said: "Well, at least he's not complaining about our accent!"

By the way, Linde's grandfather once lived in the Kremlin and led cultural work for Latvian riflemen. Nowadays that would be like running cultural programs at Liepāja Olympic Center — just with less chlorine in the pool and more politics in the atmosphere.
