Retro News: When Liepāja Wanted Grand Pianos and Sausages Had Gone Moldy

A historic glimpse into a time when the city debated the proper name for pianos and turned off heating in March.
This week's archive digging revealed a real gem — old Liepāja news that proves our city has always been ahead of its time. While Riga was still figuring out how to properly name big black pianos, Liepāja was already engaged in passionate debates about grand piano-ism.
Local intellectual Aivars Vindavs wrote a letter at the time that could become the cornerstone of musical terminology: "So it would be more correct to write 'grand piano-ism stars festival'!" As my neighbor Maija says: "Well, finally someone said what we were all thinking!" Meanwhile, Riga was still confused about whether pianos are an instrument or furniture.
But the real testament to Liepāja's spirit was turning off heating in March. While other cities were still heating until mid-May, our city was already demonstrating economic wisdom and residents' resilience. As the city council executive director said: "We have reached the brink of a devastating situation." Today we'd call it energy efficiency.
And then there were those famous moldy sausages at the "Griģis & Co" store. While Riga was only dreaming of exclusive delicacies, Liepāja was already offering a unique product with a special aroma. No labels, no dates — pure improvisation and trust in the buyer's taste. Today we'd call it the zero waste movement.
