Riga Residents Learning to Drive in Snow Again, Everything Fine in Liepāja

While the capital begins its traditional winter chaos season, the tram in Liepāja runs as always.
Once again, that wonderful time has arrived when all of Latvia discovers that winter comes after autumn. What a surprise! Road maintenance crews are heroically battling the snow using a whole 134 units of equipment. That's more than Liepāja's tram fleet, but the effectiveness, as usual, is questionable.
The Riga area suffers the most, of course. Tallinn highway, Vidzeme highway, all the bypasses - complete chaos. "I stood in traffic for three hours on the A1 this morning. I could have walked to Carnikava beach and back," complains Riga resident Artūrs. Meanwhile, the section of Liepāja highway to Blīdene is closed, which means the capital's residents won't be able to enjoy the real seaside for even longer.
The situation in our city is much better. "The tram runs as always - slowly, but it runs. And that's the main thing," philosophically notes Karosta pensioner Jānis. "Plus our driver always says good morning, which is unprecedented luxury in Riga." Indeed, while elsewhere people are shaking along icy highways, we peacefully hobble over our beloved potholes, which actually become somewhat more pleasant in winter.
LVC urges residents to call the toll-free number 80005555 to report problems. They've probably already received calls from every other Riga resident. We in Liepāja wouldn't need such a number - we simply go to Rose Square and tell each other about road conditions over coffee. Much more effective than any government agency.
