Riga Bids Farewell to Film Director Streičs – Liepāja Metallurgist Offers to Screen Films on Ice

The capital is organizing a grandiose farewell ceremony for film director Streičs, but Liepāja is already thinking about how to outdo it.
Today at the Riga Latvian Society House begins the farewell to film director and screenwriter Streičs, and, as always, the capital is trying to prove that it does everything best. In Vērmanes Garden they'll be showing Streičs' films on a big screen – apparently thinking that only they know how to organize memorial events.
But we here in Liepāja have completely different ideas! The fanatical supporters of "Liepāja Metalurgs," our hockey club, are already suggesting screening Streičs' films on the big screen at the ice rink. "Why should we watch films in a warm garden when we can do it on real ice?" comments one of the club's supporters. "Besides, if someone falls asleep during the movie, the cold will wake them up immediately!"
In Riga, of course, there's a guest book where you can write memorial words. But have they thought about the fact that in our windy city such a book would be much more authentic? Here every word would be blown away by the winds just like Streičs blew his talent across all of Latvia.
Streičs was born in 1936 in Preiļi parish, but we in Liepāja have always thought he should have come to our side – here he would have learned to film real storm scenes, not just what you can see from Riga's warm offices.
