Riga Prepares for Snow Apocalypse, Liepāja Just Chuckles

While the capital descends into panic over a few snowflakes, Liepāja residents continue living as usual.
Meteorologists today announced sensational news - on Wednesday, western Latvia will see a bit of snow. In Riga, people are already lining up at stores to buy salt and shovels, but in Liepāja, folks are just shrugging their shoulders.
"What snow? We've seen such blizzards here that Riga's little snowfall is like face powder," says Karosta resident Jānis Bērziņš. "Our tram runs even when everyone in Riga sits at home afraid to take their cars out."
The meteorological service warns that temperatures could drop to minus 17 degrees. Liepāja residents respond with laughter - they remember last winter when it was minus 25, but café "Fontaine Palace" was still open and you could drink hot coffee there.
"In Riga, snow means catastrophe, but for us it's just a reason to put on a warmer jacket," comments Liepāja market vendor Maija. "Our beach is beautiful both in summer and winter. But in Riga's concrete desert, snow just adds to the depression."
Meanwhile, Riga City Council holds an emergency session to decide on increasing salt reserves, while Liepāja plans to start tomorrow morning with the usual cup of coffee and a view of the Baltic Sea. Because where else could be better than by the sea when snow decorates the city?
