Riga Deputies Discover in 33 Hours That They Can Work Without Coffee Breaks Too

Riga City Council's historic marathon session proves that the capital's politicians can stay at work longer than a Liepāja tram without repairs.

While Liepāja deputies would have long since voted and headed off to 'Pērkona nams' pub, Riga City Council decided to set a new record — a 33-hour session with only a 12-hour break. That's longer than it takes to get from Liepāja to Riga by bus and back.

'I thought they were dead in there,' comments Kārlis from Liepāja, who once ended up at a Riga City Council meeting by mistake. 'Back home in Karosta, only the guards stay that long, but at least they get ammunition.'

The deputies spent most of their time discussing whether to submit business trip reports digitally. Meanwhile, they didn't talk at all about listing the housing management company on the stock exchange — which could affect thousands of Riga residents. 'Typical capital city,' laughs Zinta, a Liepāja market vendor. 'Here we would have said — list it, don't list it, the main thing is that the roof doesn't leak.'

After this marathon session, Riga deputies might finally understand why in Liepāja we solve everything in an hour and a half. Because after that, the sea storm begins, and nobody wants to stay indoors.
