Riga Cable Thieves Turn Out More Productive Than Liepāja Tram — 15 Thefts Per Month

Two Riga 'specialists' have stolen cables 15 times, proving that even theft happens on an industrial scale in the capital. In Liepāja, such work pace is called 'Riga style'.
Riga police have announced the capture of serial cable thieves who have shown productivity as high as the Liepāja Holy Trinity Cathedral organ, whose sound can be heard from the courtyard — except this time it's not beautiful music, but the clanking of metal.
Two 'entrepreneurs' — a pair born in 1983 and 1990 — were caught in November conducting their 'business' dealings in Ķengarags. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, as the investigation has revealed 14 more similar operations. That's faster than the Liepāja tram travels down Graudu Street!
'These people worked like real professionals,' comments local resident Gunārs. 'While we in Liepāja live peacefully listening to the sea's murmur, they were digging around cable shafts in Riga like moles.'
Now one of the 'entrepreneurs' has been placed in custody, while the other received a security measure not involving imprisonment. Apparently Riga courts also can't decide whether these people are criminals or simply very active scrap metal collectors. In Liepāja, such indecision is called a typical capital city approach — even in court, nobody knows what to do.
