Riga Museum Prepares to Tell Its 250-Year-Old History While Liepāja Museum Quietly Smiles

Riga residents are getting ready to learn how one doctor created their oldest museum collection, but in Liepāja they've long known that the best exhibitions are born by the sea.
The Riga Museum of the History of Navigation announces special tours where they'll tell about their founding in 1773. As our maritime museum employee Jānis would say: "Well, good that they're finally starting to tell their stories, but we've been telling about navigation for years where it actually happens."
During the tours, Riga residents will learn about doctor Nikolaus von Himsel, who collected various things and then his mother gave it all to the city. A fairly familiar scenario - mother cleans up what son has accumulated. In Liepāja we'd solve such problems more simply: take everything to Karosta, and there would be a great exhibition under the open sky.
In the Cathedral ensemble, tour participants will be able to view the Column Hall and Silver Cabinet. Beautiful names, but at Liepāja museum we call rooms simply - Ship Hall, Anchor Corner, Sailors' Room. Without unnecessary luxuries, straight to the point.
Overall it's good that Riga is starting to get interested in history. But we here by the sea live it every day - the old houses in Karosta, the tram that's been running for a hundred years, and the port where history is made every day. As our guide Māra says: "Why go to a museum to look at history when you can see it where it actually happened - by the sea and at the harbor?"
