Riga Driver Gets Closer to Cabinet of Ministers Than Ever Before — Unfortunately With a Bus

A Riga public transport bus driver on Brīvības Boulevard proved that his health condition is as unstable as government decisions.

While in Liepāja our buses peacefully rumble along Kuršu and Klaipēdas streets, this morning in Riga a sensational experiment took place — route 6 bus decided to personally visit the Cabinet of Ministers. Unfortunately not with an official visit, but rather through the median strip.

Around 10:30, the driver, whose health condition deteriorated, proved that even when sick he thinks about work — the bus headed straight for the government building. Maybe he simply wanted to submit an application about working conditions or a salary raise? The passengers, fortunately, were unharmed — possibly they were already used to unpredictable route changes.

As a friend of mine from Karosta says: "In our tsarist-era basements someone also gets lost sometimes, but at least there it's clear that you go left or right — not like these Riga folks who don't know where they're going." True, our Karosta was a tsarist navy base with mythical basements, but at least there you know where the exits are.

Brīvības Boulevard today proved that in Riga even median strips are more dangerous than Liepāja storms. At least with us, when the wind blows 25 meters per second, buses drive on the road, not through green zones. But what do we provincials know about these big city problems — we don't know what real traffic stress is like.
