Riga Students Will Learn How to Make Films About Having No Money for Films

While the capital organizes expensive festivals in English, in Liepāja we've been filming with phones by Lake Liepāja for years and the result is just as good.

This month in Riga there will be a student short film festival called "Is It Easy Being Young?", which is already a rhetorical question in itself, considering that participation costs 35 euros for a certificate. While the capital learns how to professionally collaborate with producers, in Liepāja we've known for years — if there's no money, film with your phone by Lake Liepāja, and the result will be just as emotional.

The festival program includes masterclasses in English, because apparently Latvian isn't cinematic enough. Director Lauris Ābele will talk about his film "Castrated Boar", which won at the Tampere festival. In Liepāja we could also win international festivals, but we don't have time — we have to go to work in Riga to earn money for tickets to such events.

It's particularly touching that the festival is dedicated to "bringing together young cinema professionals". In Liepāja, young professionals meet every Saturday at "Fontaine Palace" cinema, where for 4 euros you can watch the latest Hollywood film and still have money left for popcorn. Without any masterclasses or certificates.

Most interesting is that the festival will show the film "Bankruptcy City", which, by the way, is a very accurate description of Riga's cultural life. But we in Liepāja know — the real cinematic experience is when you sit in the sand by Lake Liepāja, look at the sea and dream about films you'll never make because the money went to rent in the capital.
