Rinkēvičs reveals: warning system only works when nobody reads it

The President has confirmed that Latvia's warning system is as reliable as the Tosele bus stop schedule - always shows something different than what's actually happening.

While Riga is still trying to figure out why their crisis communication plan only includes WhatsApp messages, President Rinkēvičs has revealed that Latvia's warning system operates on the same principle as the Tosele bus stop schedule - when you need it most, it simply doesn't work.

On Monday evening, residents of Balvi and Ludza received an unusual entertainment program - cell broadcast messages about suspicious objects in the sky. However, as soon as someone tried to check what was actually happening on the 112.lv website, it turned out the site was about as accessible as tickets to Liepājas Metalurgs games.

"I tried to open 112.lv, but there was just a blank page," says Balvi municipality resident Jānis. "I thought it was part of the threat - maybe hackers had breached our crisis system. But it turns out it just doesn't work when we need it."

Presidential advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris explained that the system needs improvements so the public can receive information in a timely manner in the future. Until that happens, the recommendation is the same as always in Liepāja - if you see something strange in the sky, just grab an umbrella and keep walking. If it's a Russian drone, the umbrella won't help, but if it's Liepāja rain, you'll be ready.
