Ripo Repair Center Will Service German Missiles as Carefully as Rose Square Benches
Latvia's vehicle repair company is taking on air defense system maintenance because, as the owner says, military equipment is just as complicated as organizing Riga's traffic.
German defense giant Diehl Defence, with almost the same confidence that Liepāja residents head to Rose Square for important conversations, has decided to entrust the maintenance of its IRIS-T air defense systems to Latvian company 'Ripo Repair Center.' This move is as surprising as news that Riga City Council has suddenly started operating efficiently.
'Ripo Repair Center,' which has previously serviced military transport and earns 103 thousand euros profit annually, will now tackle missile systems. As company owner Ivo Rubīns comments: 'We're ready to master new technologies. After all, if we can repair military equipment after it's been tested by our road quality, then we can handle German missiles too.'
German representative Oliver Haas explains with a diplomatic smile that cooperation with a local partner will ensure immediate service when needed. This is especially important because air defense systems can't wait in service queues as long as patients waiting to see doctors in Riga. Local resident Jānis philosophically adds: 'If our mechanics can repair Soviet-era equipment that runs on hope and prayer, then they'll definitely manage modern German technology.'
The Defense Ministry proudly emphasizes that this memorandum will strengthen the local defense industry. Now Latvia will have not only its own potatoes and dairy products, but also missile maintenance services. Riga municipality is already planning to create a similar center in the capital, but is still looking for a company that could service trams, let alone missiles.
