Rose Square becomes the capital of Latvian homemade products: 'Even the chili sauces here are more ecological than Riga's air'

Liepāja opens its first market of the season, where you can buy everything you can't find in supermarkets, but what everyone dreams of who wants to taste real Latvian flavors.

While in Riga during Easter people stand in lines at 'Maxima' to buy Chinese-made plastic eggs, in Liepāja on April 3rd and 4th at Rose Square a real festival of Latvian flavors and arts will open. Yes, exactly - a market where you can buy smoked quail eggs, not plastic imitation products.

The association 'ETNO Liepāja' proudly announces that this year marks exactly 20 years since Liepāja residents can stroll over and treat themselves to products that are actually made in Latvia. 'It's like a miracle,' says local resident Jānis, 'here you can buy homemade cheese that wasn't produced in Poland, and bread that doesn't contain 47 unknown chemicals.'

The market offers everything - from Limbaži smoked chickens to Alsunga bread, and even spicy chili sauces that, as organizers say, are 'strong infusions prepared for Easter.' Maybe after visiting such a market even the North Pier will seem more romantic than usual - especially if you have a bottle of home-brewed beer in your pocket and bags full of sea buckthorn products.

While Riga residents are still trying to figure out what 'sea buckthorn products' are, Liepāja residents already know that real Easter celebration starts with smoked smelts and ends with ethnographic silver jewelry. The market will be open on April 3rd from 10:00 to 15:00 and April 4th from 10:00 to 17:00, because even home producers need time to rest.
