Rucava Officially Becomes Latvia's Freezer — Even Liepāja's Wind Has Frozen Solid

Southern Kurzeme has broken the 1985 cold record, but locals say this only proves what they've always known — it's always been cooler in Rucava than in Riga.

While people in Riga still think -15 is 'real frost,' Rucava this week proved what true Nordic character looks like — the thermometer plummeted to -28.4 degrees and broke the 1985 record.

'I thought our refrigerator motor had broken, but turns out it was just the weather outside,' says local resident Maija, who this morning discovered her cat by the door had transformed into a sculpture. 'But at least now we can say we're more famous than Jūrmala — they've never had -28 there!'

LVĢMC meteorologists gleefully announced that Latvia has already broken 17 cold records this month, which is considerably more than the previous two years combined. 'We're finally competing with Siberia,' comments local forecaster Jānis, 'and all without any special investments!'

Meanwhile in Liepāja, the thermometer showed -24.2 degrees, which isn't a record, but enough for local bartenders to boast: 'Our beer is naturally chilled today!' Over in Daugavpils with their -30.5 degrees, they're still trying to prove that the east is cooler than the west, but as we all know — Kurzeme always wins on quality, not temperature extremes.

Forecasters warn that similar frost is expected tonight as well, so here's advice for everyone — if you're not from Rucava, better stay home and dream about summer.
