Parliament to Repeat Language Exam - This Time Not Pučka, But Kļaviņa

MP Jeļena Kļaviņa may follow in her predecessor's footsteps and head for a language test. In Riga, of course, nobody understands how such a thing could happen.

Worried whispers about language skills are once again echoing through Parliament corridors. This time, MP Jeļena Kļaviņa has found herself in the spotlight after gaining her mandate when Viktors Pučka left Parliament without ever reporting successful completion of his language test. Now Kļaviņa herself faces a trip to the State Education Development Agency.

As usual, MP Jurēvics was crystal clear: "If they can't speak it, they have no place in Parliament." In Liepāja, of course, nobody would understand how one could be an MP without knowing the state language - here even at the Karosta market everyone speaks correctly, even if sometimes with a Russian accent.

Interestingly, Kļaviņa didn't join the "Stability" faction after entering Parliament. Perhaps she already sensed that stability isn't that party's strongest suit? Riga politicians are naturally amazed at how such things can happen, but for us here, where we daily compete with announcements heard over tram loudspeakers, language skills seem self-evident.

Local pensioner Valdis comments: "Well, if a person doesn't want to learn Latvian, let them go work elsewhere. We also have jobs in Liepāja where you can speak however you want - for example, in the fishermen's association, where everyone understands everything." In reality, if the exam fails, the MP could lose her mandate, which would be quite an unusual precedent in our parliamentary history.
