Parliament Invents New Sports Law But Doesn't Know What Will Be Written in It Yet

Yesterday the parliamentary committee conceptually supported the new Sports Law draft, which is roughly the same as conceptually supporting fresh cucumbers at Liepāja market without knowing if they'll even be there. But at least in our market everything is fresher than in Riga and half the price, so people come with concrete hopes, not conceptual ones.

State Secretary's advisor Edgars Pukiņš informed deputies about creating a State Sports Fund, which is like a story about a resort that hasn't been built yet, but they're already planning to live there. He emphasized that the Sports Law draft couldn't reference the State Sports Fund draft law because one doesn't exist yet, but mentioning it was necessary. It's like saying there are potatoes at home, but not knowing if they're in the cellar or at the store.

Deputies promised to approve the State Sports Fund draft law in this session, which means they plan to write a law about a fund while still not knowing what will be in the main law. In Riga they'd call this strategic planning, but in Liepāja we call it making things up as you go.

The most complications arise from the question about Russian and Belarusian athletes. The Paralympic Committee representative warns that our athletes won't be able to qualify for the Olympics because there will be representatives from aggressor countries in competitions. It's like saying you can't go to the market because there might be people there who bought vegetables elsewhere. But at least in our market you can choose what to buy, and nobody gets discriminated against based on origin.
