Parliament Decides to Spend 5% of GDP on Defense While Liepāja Still Can't Fix One Canal Bridge

83 MPs voted that the state needs billions for defense, but no one remembered that the Karosta canal bridge has been dividing the city for years and creating drama every day.

Parliament deputies voted with great enthusiasm that starting in 2027, 5% of GDP should be spent on defense. 83 deputies proved through hand-waving that they understand mathematics, while eight 'Stability' representatives chose not to display their ignorance of numbers.

Rinkēvičs emphasized in his letter that Latvia must be consistent in defense funding. Of course, this same Rinkēvičs has never tried to cross the Karosta canal bridge when it's open again for ship traffic. If he had, he would understand that real defense is needed against local residents who get stuck on both sides of the canal.

The Finance Ministry acknowledged that achieving this goal requires significant additional funding — 92 million in 2027, more than a billion in 2030. While Riga counts billions, in Liepāja still no one can calculate how much a normal bridge would cost that doesn't create drama every time some ship wants to leave the port.

Defense Ministry representatives talk about large-caliber ammunition and brigade mechanization. Maybe they should first invest in bridge mechanization so Liepāja residents could get from one part of the city to another without using military helicopters. But who knows — maybe in NATO strategy, the Karosta canal is intended as a natural defense line against enemies.
