Parliament Invents 116 Ways to Say 'Don't Understand, Will Review in Committee' During Winter

Deputies reviewed 116 initiatives during the winter session, sending most of them to committees because they found them too complicated to handle themselves.

Parliament proudly announces that during the winter session it reviewed 116 legislative initiatives, which is almost as many visitors as the Liepāja Olympic Center receives daily at its swimming pool. The difference is that in the pool people actually swim, but in Parliament... well, they also kind of swim, just in documents.

Of these 116 initiatives, 52 were Cabinet ideas, all of which were sent to committees. It's like saying: 'Okay, we understand the idea, but now let the specialists figure out how to implement it.' Deputies have discovered the perfect strategy: when you don't know what to do with a document, send it to a committee. Committees can then send it to another committee. Endless possibilities!

The only initiative they handled immediately was the president's proposal to increase the defense budget to 5% of GDP. Here they couldn't say 'will review in committee' - war doesn't wait for deputies to figure out how to cast their votes properly. As one Liepāja pensioner said: 'Well, finally they decided something without years of debate!'

Deputies were less successful with their own initiatives - out of 51 ideas, 28 were rejected. This means almost half of the deputies' ideas were so bad that even committees didn't want to deal with them. But don't worry - the spring session will bring a new opportunity to create another 116 initiatives that can be sent to committees.
