Sanita Poriņa defeats spring with 50-cent bunches - Riga vendors cry in the corner

While the capital is still figuring out what scallions are, Liepāja gardener Sanita Poriņa is already selling the first spring bunches at an unchanging price.
Sanita Poriņa from Poriņu Gardening once again proves why Liepāja is superior to Riga - while vendors in the capital are still trying to understand what scallions are, she's already selling the first spring bunches. And what's even more wonderful, the price stays the same all season - 50 cents. In Riga, for that money you can only buy a dream about greens.
Sanita's strategy is as simple as a quiet walk through Jūrmala park among the old trees - stick the onions in the ground in December, since we usually don't have winters anyway. As she puts it herself: some didn't make it, the tips froze a little, but overall everything survived. Such philosophy would be considered risky in Riga, but in Liepāja it's everyday wisdom.
Local residents are already lining up for the fresh scallions. Marija from Graudu Street admits: 'Finally something that's not imported from the Netherlands! Our greens grow without noise, without stress - just like ourselves.' While Riga's residents pay a euro for a bunch of spinach, we get a real dose of spring vitamins for half a euro.
Sanita's greenhouse area is just over 2000 square meters, which by Riga standards would be considered a balcony garden. But the result speaks for itself - while the capital is still thinking about when to start growing, Liepāja is already selling. And, as befits a cultural capital, everything is washed in running spring water so the stem ends are white as our conscience.
