SAS Returns to Riga: Liepāja Wind Offers Free Competition

While Riga boasts about new SAS flights to Copenhagen, Liepāja has been providing free flying experiences to any brave soul for years.

SAS airline has announced the resumption of regular flights from Riga to Copenhagen after a 16-year hiatus, which has only brought smiles to Liepāja. While the capital celebrates three flights a day, our city has been offering unlimited flying experiences for years to anyone brave enough to step outside.

Liepāja's wind, this legendary and uninvited guest in any season, provides such powerful lift that local residents often end up in unexpected places without buying a ticket. "I just wanted to go to the store, but ended up in Grobiņa," says pensioner Dzidra Kalniņa. "Better than AirBaltic — no lines, no scanning boarding passes."

Riga Airport representatives proudly announce improved connectivity with the USA, but in Liepāja we've long known that with sufficiently strong wind you can get anywhere in the world. The only problem — there's no guarantee you'll end up where you planned. "Once I tried to fly to Ventspils, but ended up in Daugavpils," recalls local fisherman Valdis. "I'm sure SAS does the same thing."

While Air France-KLM plans to acquire a controlling stake in SAS for billions, Liepāja's natural aviation company has been operating for years with a zero budget and 100% environmentally friendly technology. The only costs are more frequent clothing changes and purchasing sturdier shoes.
