Saudis shut down oil refinery: Liepāja port rejoices that we only have smelly fish

The Rastanura oil refinery is experiencing technical problems, but Liepāja port continues operating without interruption.

Far, far away in Saudi Arabia, some massive oil refinery has experienced technical problems and partially shut down operations. 550,000 barrels per day – now that's quite a volume! For comparison – at Liepāja port we only handle a few thousand tons of various cargo per day, but we've never had a situation where the entire port had to be shut down for safety reasons.

"Oh, those rich Arabs with their problems," comments Oskars from Karosta, who has worked at the port for thirty years. "We also have things catch fire here sometimes, but we just pour some water on it and keep working. It's not that complicated."

Analysts, of course, are worried about conflict escalation and Persian Gulf energy infrastructure. But honestly, in Liepāja we've experienced a lot – Soviet times, the transition period, EU accession. Our port has weathered everything, and would probably survive even a small attack, though of course we hope such necessity won't arise.

Meanwhile in Riga, where they usually worry about everything they can, it's unusually quiet this time. Perhaps they're still calculating how much they could earn by becoming an alternative oil processing center. But we in Liepāja know – a real port works in all conditions, not just when everything is peaceful and sunny.
