On Saturday, Latvia's roads proved they are safer than Liepāja beach during a storm

Ten people were injured in traffic accidents, but at least nobody tried to go swimming in the Baltic Sea in January.
On Saturday, Latvia's roads proved they can be just as unpredictable as Liepāja beach weather conditions – ten people were injured in various traffic accidents, which is fewer than the number of tourists who usually get hurt trying to take selfies by the Baltic Sea during storms.
The highest concentration of accidents was in the Riga region – 42 cases. This is about as surprising as the fact that Riga residents don't know how to drive properly on roads outside the capital. "They think everywhere has the same smooth asphalt as Brīvības Street," comments local road expert Jānis.
Kurzeme had 12 accidents, which is surprisingly few considering our drivers have to battle wind every day that can blow cars off the road as easily as sand grains from the beach. "We're used to the wind being the third traffic participant," says Pēteris, a driving instructor from Liepāja.
The cyclist who was also injured in an accident was probably not from Liepāja – our cyclists learned long ago that in winter it's better to stay home and watch the wind blow snow across the cold beach. At least that's safer than trying to compete with cars on slippery roads.
