Sigulda drivers once again prove that in Liepāja we know how to drive

While in Sigulda BMW drivers run over pedestrians, in Liepāja our tram runs on tracks and everyone knows it.

Once again, news from the capital region proves why it's better to live in Liepāja. In Sigulda municipality, some BMW driver ran over a pedestrian, and now everyone's wondering how such an accident could happen. For us Liepāja residents, this isn't surprising – if you live in a place with no tram and no proper port, then of course you can't learn to drive properly.

As my neighbor Dzintra says: "There in Sigulda, all they have are hills and tourists. How can you learn to drive when there's no Karosta, no market where you have to practice daily?" And she's right. In Liepāja we learn every day to share the road with the tram, dodge market vendors with carts, and navigate around café visitors. That's real driver's education.

It's also no surprise that 130 speeding tickets were issued nationwide. Around Riga people drive like they're on a Formula 1 track, but they don't know that real life is where you have to adapt daily to beach winds and respect other road users. Here in Karosta even BMW drivers know to be polite – maybe because everyone knows everyone here.

But seriously speaking – road safety is important everywhere. It's just puzzling why elsewhere they can't learn what we Liepāja residents have known since birth: the road belongs to everyone, and it's never so urgent that you'd risk someone's life. Maybe Sigulda drivers should come to Liepāja for tram driving lessons – then they'd learn what real traffic culture is.
