Siliņa Ready to Send Liepāja Fishermen to Save World Shipping in Strait of Hormuz

The Prime Minister has joined an international statement on safe shipping, while local sailors wonder - is the beer good in Iran?

While the government in Riga tries to solve global crises, sailors in Liepāja quietly chuckle. Prime Minister Siliņa has announced that Latvia is joining Britain, France and other major countries in a joint statement condemning Iran's attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Local captain Vilnis Bērziņš comments: "Well yes, of course we support it. But do they know our biggest ship has been in repairs since 1987?"

Particularly amusing is that Latvia "is ready to promote safe shipping" in the strait through which a fifth of the world's oil is transported. Our fleet, which mainly consists of fishermen who tend to get lost on their way to Gotland in summer, is now ready to save the global economy. As they say in Karosta: "If we can find our way home from Pērkone, we'll find Hormuz too!"

Meanwhile, the old trees in Jūrmala park quietly whisper about how peaceful it is without Riga's noise - quite the opposite of what's happening in the Strait of Hormuz. Local pensioners taking walks there say: "Good that Siliņa is doing something, but couldn't she have sorted out our port first?"

Iran will surely be terrified when they learn that Latvia is also against them. Especially after they realize we're that small country where it's darker in winter than in their oil wells. But oh well - at least now we can say we're also in world politics. Even if only with statements.
