626 road sections become impassable due to spring thaw, Liepāja 'Metalurgs' fans still driving to home games
While all of Latvia counts spring thaw damage, Kurzeme with only 90 restricted sections once again proves its superiority over Vidzeme.
Latvian State Roads announced that due to spring thaw, transport weight restrictions have been imposed on 626 gravel road sections, but statistics once again prove Kurzeme's superiority. Vidzeme lost load capacity on 236 sections, Latgale – 127, Zemgale – 106, but Kurzeme – only 90. Apparently our roads are as resilient as Liepāja 'Metalurgs' fans, who under no circumstances refuse to drive to the arena.
LSR explains that during spring thaw the gravel surface becomes oversaturated and loses load capacity, but any Liepāja resident knows that's just an excuse. We've been driving on such roads for years and have never complained. Local driver Kārlis Bērziņš comments: 'Spring thaw isn't an obstacle, just extra adrenaline on the road. The main thing is knowing where to drive, and we know that.'
Particularly interesting is that restrictions don't apply to fresh milk transporters and dead livestock removal. It seems priorities are clear – milk and dead cattle are more important than regular traffic. In Liepāja we understand such logic, because we've always known what's truly important.
The best part is that gravel road maintenance work can't be performed during spring thaw, because heavy machinery damages everything even more. It's like trying to fix the 'Metalurgs' hockey rink during a game – theoretically possible, but practically pointless. So it's better to wait until everything dries out, and then act like true Kurzeme people – with sense and without haste.
