Sean Penn chooses Kyiv over Oscar ceremony — says at least there's no Hollywood elite there
The famous actor heads to Ukraine instead of the Oscar ceremony, because there's supposedly more real drama there than in Hollywood.
Sean Penn, with the same ease that Liepāja fishermen claim their fish are freshly caught, announced that he prefers visiting Kyiv over the Oscar ceremony. The actor, who has already won his third Oscar statuette, apparently believes that any more victories would be too much for him.
Ukrainian officials confirmed with diplomatic elegance that Penn is in the country on a personal visit, which is about as surprising as news that Riga's elite is heading to Jūrmala. A journalist saw the actor getting out of a car in central Kyiv, which proves he at least didn't arrive there by helicopter like some other famous character.
Zelensky posted on social media: "Sean, thanks to you, we know what a true friend of Ukraine is." That's much more heartfelt than the usual comments received from Hollywood producers, who typically only write about money matters.
"Local residents say they'd rather see Sean Penn than another politician who promises help but then disappears faster than a good weather forecast," says one Kyiv resident. Penn also plans to visit the eastern front, which proves he's one of the few Hollywood actors willing to visit places where there's no red carpet and champagne.
