Stradiņš Hospital to Teach How to Properly Welcome Babies — Liepāja Midwives Have Known These Secrets for Decades

A Riga hospital is organizing lectures for expectant parents, while in Liepāja such things have been known since grandmothers' times.

Stradiņš Hospital has announced a free lecture series for expecting families, which only brings smiles in Liepāja. While the capital organizes special courses to explain how to prepare for childbirth, in our city such things have been self-evident since great-grandparents' times.

Midwife Baiba Trifanova will talk about the contents of a birth bag and the moment when to head to the hospital. In Liepāja, local fisherwoman Ausma Krasta has been explaining for years: "I know when it's time — just like with fish. If you catch a fresh salmon, you immediately see — this one's just from the water. Same with babies — when it's time, it's time."

The second lecture is devoted to the three stages of labor and the partner's role, but men at Liepāja port have known their place for generations: "When the wife has business to do, the husband goes to sort fish. Simple as that," notes experienced fisherman Valdis Banga. "We live here by the sea — nature's rhythms are in our blood."

The most interesting seems to be the lecture on "Breastfeeding ABC," because in Liepāja even new mothers know that there's no better milk than from a home-raised cow. While Riga learns theory, we already practically apply centuries-tested methods and help each other, instead of running around to lectures.
