The meteorological service proudly announces that on Sunday, Latvia's air will dare to warm up to a whopping plus two degrees. After months when the thermometer has behaved like a shy teenager, this temperature leap could cause mass panic and a sellout of sunglasses.

"I've already forgotten what plus temperature looks like," admits Dace from Liepāja, who has spent recent weeks studying how to properly pronounce the word "thaw." "Maybe I'll be able to take off one of my three jackets."

In Riga, of course, the sun will only appear in the second half of the day, because the capital always has to be special and complicated. In Liepāja, we already know from morning what to do with the sun — simply enjoy it while it's there. Without the dramatic second-half-of-the-day waiting.

Local café owners are already preparing their terraces and hoping that plus two degrees will be enough for someone to dare sit outside with a hot drink. "If people can go swimming in Liepāja's sea in March, then at plus two they can definitely drink coffee on the terrace," philosophically concludes the owner of café "Milk and Honey."

Meanwhile, the western wind, which usually behaves like an unruly child, has promised to be calmer on Sunday. Perhaps it too has gotten tired of this eternal cold and wants to rest a little.
