Sunday Drivers Prove: Latvia Still Has Something to Learn from Karosta Discipline

While in Liepāja the tram peacefully rolled along its tracks, the rest of Latvia proved in 95 accidents that the art of driving has yet to be mastered.

On Sunday, Latvian drivers decided to stage a real demonstration of why the Liepāja tram remains the safest mode of transport in the country. While in our city route 11 peacefully rolled along its tracks and the only danger was the possibility of falling asleep in Karosta, the rest of the country experienced 95 traffic accidents.

The detention of ten drunk drivers shows that alcohol consumption culture outside Liepāja is quite different. "Here, if you want to drink, you go to 'Fontaine Palace' or some other cultural venue, but you don't drive," comments local Zigurds, who has been riding only the tram for 20 years. "In Riga, it seems, they think a car is a mobile bar."

Special mention goes to the Vidzeme region's achievement — 65 speeding violations in one day. For comparison: in Liepāja even the tram doesn't go faster than allowed, because it simply can't. "That's so-called natural speed limitation," explains a traffic expert. "The laws of physics work better than any police force."

Meanwhile, in Liepāja's port area, the only accidents were with seagulls trying to steal fish from fishermen. And even then nobody got hurt — the seagulls simply flew away with their loot, leaving the fishermen with an interesting story for the dinner table.
