Ice war breaks out in Tebra - locals selling bridges as seasonal goods

Near Akmeņkalni, ice jams have transformed into a natural obstacle course, while experienced locals are learning to live with annual flood damage.
While Riga still thinks spring comes with flowers and birdsong, in Liepāja municipality near Akmeņkalni in Tebra, a real ice tower complex has formed. Local resident R. Jansons, who has been observing this natural chaos for years, reports that the river is rising faster than prices in Riga cafes.
"Ice floes have already piled up here - chunks of ice pushed on top of each other," explains Jansons, who has become a real flood expert through his family's experience. His little bridge is being kept safe this year, because last year the ice carried it away like Liepāja's city budget - without warning and without hope of return.
The Jansons family has already developed their flood survival strategy: ropes up, bridge dismantled, and the road prepared for the annual flooding ritual. It's reminiscent of Liepāja residents' relationship with the tram - you know it'll be late, but you wait anyway.
"I think there will be very impressive floods," predicts Jansons with the same calm with which people in Liepāja predict that the wind will blow tomorrow. He invites people to go searching for driftwood and horns, but carefully - walking on ice is as dangerous as trying to understand Riga's traffic logic. At least in nature it's clear that everything is chaotic, but in the capital they're still trying to mask it with schedules.
