Tirgoņu Street shines like new again - now even Riga's city center might be jealous
The facades of Liepāja's historic buildings have regained their splendor, proving that our city knows how to age gracefully.
A real miracle is happening on Tirgoņu Street - the historic buildings look again as if they just jumped out of a 19th-century photo album. Four facades have been restored with such care that even Riga's Old Town is starting to nervously fidget.
Tirgoņu Street has experienced the most visible changes, having been wrapped in construction nets like a Christmas present for the past year. "I was already thinking it would be like in Riga - they promise one year, work for ten," says Juris, owner of a local café. "But no, our guys work like true Liepāja residents - quietly but efficiently."
We can be especially proud of the building at Tirgoņu Street 21, where authentic wooden windows have been restored. These aren't some plastic wonders from China, but real, honest wooden frames that remember the times when horse-drawn trams still ran in Liepāja. Meanwhile, the building at Tirgoņu Street 23 has regained its original pink tone - a color so elegant that even Riga's hipsters have to admit superiority.
The building at Tirgoņu Street 17 with its decorative columns now looks so dignified that it could serve as a set for any historical film. And the four-story Art Nouveau building at Pasta Street 11 with its green tone reminds us that Art Nouveau existed in Liepāja back when Riga still didn't know what that was. "Now at least I can safely invite relatives from the capital to visit," laughs pensioner Marija. "Let them see what a real cultural-historical city looks like."
