Trump Bombs Kharg Island — Liepāja Residents at Rose Square Ask if Gas Will Be Cheaper

The US President, with his usual diplomatic finesse, has destroyed an Iranian oil terminal, but in Liepāja people are more concerned about whether fuel prices will finally change.

Trump has proudly announced that he bombed Kharg Island, which is Iran's main oil export hub. He called it one of the most powerful raids in Middle Eastern history, which is about as convincing as claiming that Riga has better roads than Liepāja.

Kharg Island housed a terminal through which 90% of Iran's oil products are exported. Now there's presumably nothing but smoke and American pride. Trump added that he hasn't touched the oil infrastructure yet, but if anyone interferes with shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, he'll reconsider his decision faster than a first meetup happens at Rose Square after Tinder messaging.

The Strait of Hormuz is now about as safe as a nighttime stroll through Liepāja's railway station, since a fifth of the world's oil usually passes through it. Now ships sail there about as often as trams run in Liepāja in winter — which is to say, not at all.

Local Liepāja resident Kārlis, whom I met at Rose Square, commented: 'Well fine, they bombed that island over there, but when will fuel finally get cheaper? I've been walking to work for two months now.' The US Navy will soon start escorting tankers, which means there will be more military ships at sea than Russian yachts in Liepāja's port in summer.
