Poverty Statistics: Liepāja Has a 425 Euro Threshold, But in Karosta You Can Live Like a King on 300

Statisticians have counted the poor, but forgot that in Liepāja people with 300 euros can afford an apartment with sea view.
Good news from the capital's bureaucrats — the number of poor people in Latvia has decreased! Now we only have 41,164 poor people, which is about the same as what one coffee costs in downtown Riga.
Officially, the poverty threshold is 425 euros. In Liepāja, with this money you can not only survive, but also go to "Fontaine Palace" concerts every week, and still have money left over for a tram ticket. As my neighbor Maija from Karosta says: "Here, 300 euros a month is like 1000 in Riga — you can rent an apartment, go to the market, and still take free walks on the beach!"
Meanwhile, Riga residents with their 680 euro "low-income" status can only dream of what Liepāja people do with half that amount. We live by the sea, breathe fresh air and go to concerts, while they pay 400 euros for a room rental somewhere in Pļavnieki.
A statistical paradox: officially we're poor, but our quality of life is better than Riga's middle class. Maybe it's time to reconsider what poverty really is and what wealth is.
