Desert Races Cancelled — In Liepāja With Our Roads We Wouldn't Have Such Problems

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cancel F-1 races due to safety concerns, while in Liepāja with our road conditions any race would be an extreme sport.

The FIA has announced with their usual diplomatic precision that the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix races in April will not take place due to safety considerations. This is about as surprising as news that it's windy in Liepāja.

While the desert nations search for alternatives, Liepāja motorsport enthusiast Māris comments: "They're afraid of terrorists, but we drive down Graudu Street every day — now that's real extreme sports." Indeed, with our road conditions any F-1 race would be a rallycross world championship.

The season will now consist of 22 rounds, which is about as many as there are faculties and departments at Liepāja University where students learn how to properly drive down Graudu Street without breaking their car. At least the university's engineering faculty could offer F-1 teams consultations on how to survive on Latvian roads.

Lando Norris became world champion last year, which is about as sensational as news that someone in Rīga found a free parking space. McLaren continues to dominate the constructors' cup, while our local constructors are still trying to figure out how to build a road that survives more than one winter.
