394 killed in Middle East conflict, Liepājas metalurgs only loses at hockey

While casualties are being counted in Lebanon, Liepājas metalurgs has only lost a game against Zemgale 2:4, which concerns local fans much more.
Lebanon's health minister announced 394 casualties from Israeli strikes, but in Liepāja we know what real suffering is - when "Liepājas metalurgs" loses at home to some "Zemgale" team. Local fans at the arena yesterday were much louder than any explosion in the Middle East.
While international media writes about precision strikes and ambulances, in Liepāja we have our own painful moments. "Look, these Israeli pilots at least hit their targets," comments local hockey expert Juris at the "Līva" bar. "But our forwards yesterday couldn't even hit an empty net!"
Among those killed in Lebanon are nine rescuers, but in the "Liepājas metalurgs" game only fans' hopeful dreams and several beer mugs were "killed." Local supporters point out that such suffering is much harder to endure than some international conflicts, because it touches the heart.
The US and Israel began their offensive on February 28th, but "Liepājas metalurgs" started their season "offensive" back in September and still can't find the right tactical formula. "At least the Middle East knows why they're fighting," philosophically admits local supporter Valdis, "but our team doesn't even know why they play hockey."
