Ukrainian drone gets lost in Lithuania — Lithuania searches for GPS instructions in Russian

A Ukrainian drone ended up in Lithuania because the GPS pointed to Primorsk, but the drone understood Varėna. Lithuanian ministers are now figuring out how to explain directions to the drone.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ruginiena announced that the object that crashed in Varėna district was a Ukrainian drone that simply got a bit lost on its way to Russia's Primorsk port. It's roughly the same as when a Riga resident tries to find Liepāja's Seaside Park — they know there are beautiful trees and a quiet walk without Riga's noise, but GPS leads them on a detour through all of Kurzeme.

Defense Minister Kauns explained that the drone was flying below 300 meters, so nobody noticed it. "Unfortunately, neither Belarus nor Lithuania detected it," he said, which makes you wonder — do they even look up? Maybe they were too busy with their phone screens.

"We have ordered additional radars, but they will arrive in 2026, 2027, and 2028," the minister explained. That's exactly the same pace at which Riga renovates its streets — by the time everything is finally ready, the technology will already be obsolete. While Lithuanians wait for their radars, Ukrainians are probably already flying drones with artificial intelligence.

Kauns is heading to Ukraine today to "discuss this incident and prevent its recurrence." Local Varėna resident Petriuks commented: "Just make sure he comes back with a GPS that can tell the difference between Primorsk and our swamp." Meanwhile, electronic warfare continues to confuse both drones and Lithuanian officials' navigation abilities.
