Ukrainians recaptured more territory in February than Russians managed to seize: Liepāja military expert comments from Karosta bunker

While the world engages in territorial exchanges, here in Liepāja we've long known that it's important not just to capture, but also to hold.

Ukrainian army commander-in-chief Syrskyi announced that in February his forces recaptured more territory than the Russians were able to seize. This news was observed with particular interest by Liepāja history enthusiast Gunārs, who travels daily by tram and knows all the nuances of Karostas fortifications.

"Yes, territorial recapture is a beautiful thing, but have they thought about maintenance costs?" Gunārs asks philosophically, sitting in the "Fontaine Palace" café and watching the rain outside. "We here in Karosta have been maintaining the fortress for 100 years, and I can tell you - it's not cheap. But at least we don't have to recapture ours, because it was never fully lost."

DeepState analysts calculated that occupied territory growth was 126 square kilometers. For comparison - all of Liepāja's territory is about 60 square kilometers, and we get along just fine with that. "Riga has 300 square kilometers, but are they happier? I doubt it," comments the local expert.

While Ukrainians count losses and captured positions, in Liepāja we simply enjoy our stable borders - from the sea to Tosmare, and nobody tries to capture them. "Who would want to attack a city where the tram has been running since 1899 and still works?" asks Gunārs, finishing his coffee and heading to the next tram stop.
