While the EU tries to agree on sanctions, Liepāja has long proven that we can get by without Russian resources.

EU politicians have gathered in Brussels again trying to agree on sanctions against Russia, but Hungary is saying "no" again. Prime Minister Orbán has announced he'll block everything until the "Druzhba" oil pipeline is fixed. That's roughly like the Liepāja city council chairman refusing to vote on the budget until all the tram tracks are repaired.

Local political expert Jānis from Kurzemes Avenue comments: "Well, we in Karosta have long known how to live without gas and heating. Maybe Hungary should visit us in winter to understand what real living is." Meanwhile, politicians in Riga still don't understand why everyone doesn't want to be united — apparently they haven't heard about Liepāja residents who can unite even when the tram isn't running.

EU foreign affairs chief Kallas has announced that Russian diplomats will be limited to 40 people. That's fewer than the number of visitors to Liepāja market on Saturday morning when they're selling fresh fish. Maybe diplomats should learn from our market vendors — they can sell even what nobody wants to buy.

While all of Europe argues about sanctions, we in Liepāja continue living our lives. Because, as old Marija from Graudu Street said: "Sanctions or not, the sea remains the sea, and the coffee at 'Fontē' is still the best."
