Ušakovs Forgets Harmony's Board Keys, But Promises There's No Subtext

Former Riga mayor announces that the board is interfering with his counting of European millions, but remains in the party as a regular member.
Nils Ušakovs, who was once the only politician capable of making Riga slightly more interesting than Liepāja's Karosta, announced this week that he's calling it quits with "Harmony's" board. The reason? He allegedly needs to concentrate on counting the European Union's 2027 budget.
"There's no subtext here," emphasized Ušakovs, known for his love of transparency – especially when it comes to budgets and where money disappears. The politician explained that his EP colleagues have entrusted him with "quite a complex and voluminous duty," which in Liepāja would be called "normal work."
Meanwhile in Riga, where people are still trying to figure out how there can be only one tram route, local observers are already speculating whether Ušakovs' departure from the board isn't related to him finally realizing that in Europe they pay better for counting budgets than for counting Riga's potholes.
"Well, at least now he can peacefully count European money instead of just dreaming about it," comments a Liepāja café visitor who well remembers the times when Ušakovs promised Riga European-level infrastructure. "Our tram here has been running for 120 years – without subtexts and budget recalculations."
Jānis Urbanovičs is meanwhile preparing the new "Harmony Center," promising to be "more left-wing" than the previous version. In Liepāja they call this "even further left than the direction to Grobiņa."
